Editorial

Welcome to the first issue of this journal. For Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) enquiry is a means by which our students can engage with interesting research topics and learn the methods and processes of research. Students conduct their own enquiry alone and as collaborators. It is the basis of critical, creative thinking. It is the essence of a Higher Education learning experience.

The Faculty of Arts, Engineering, Computing and Sciences (ACES) at SHU has a richly diverse student and staff population. Students from all walks of life come to the University to immerse themselves in learning, for all manner of purposes. They re-train for new careers, they develop new personal abilities to help them at work, they explore their creativity and they discover new aspects about themselves. For many the learning experience is a transformational journey that can be daunting, exciting and challenging. Research is an activity that can provide the stimulus for transformation, and the provision of an environment where research is embedded as part of the learning experience is fundamental for the development of enquiring minds, both young and old.

Twelve months ago we decided to create a platform that would celebrate the very best undergraduate work that is informed by research. We wanted to advertise the breadth and depth of the learning experience at SHU and showcase the talent to a wider audience. We also wanted to provide an aspirational target for new entrants to the University. All aspects of this journal have involved students, not only the article submissions, but the design, layout and web presence also.

We are now recruiting an editorial board for the second issue, who will take responsibility for the full editorial process. In keeping with our foundation principles the editorial board will be formed from the current intake of undergraduate students within the Faculty. If you are an undergraduate student in the Faculty of ACES and would like to take part in this exciting opportunity to gain real publishing experience then please contact myself or Sue Beckingham.
